American National is currently seeking candidates for the position of Underwriting Team Director.
Essential Functions and Duties:
To be the lead underwriter for a specialty team with the Brokerage market. Will be responsible for daily workflow which includes daily distribution of cases to the team in effort to keep work within time standards
Attend regular conference calls as the representative from underwriting
Provide field presentations regarding underwriting related issues
Handle referrals and second signatures from the other underwriters in the team.
Handle requests for appeals Determine when the risk requires referral to the Chief Underwriter or Underwriting Officer.
Mentor and guide the underwriters within the team
As the Lead underwriter for the team, incumbent will handle the most medically and financially complex cases.
Accurately evaluate complex financial statements, have an understanding of proper justification for large amounts of life insurance as well as sensitivity to the competitive need to respond quickly on each application while accurately assessing mortality risks.
Assist in ongoing training of the underwriting team in handling complex financial and medical underwriting cases.
Responsible for clear communications regarding underwriting guidelines and rules to the marketing organization that this team supports.
Work closely with the Director of Underwriting Standards and underwriting management on performance improvement plans for underwriters within the team that, as a result of audit findings, require additional training and closer review.
Handle contestable claim review

Qualifications:
At least 8-10 years' experience in life underwriting risk selection. Strong knowledge of risk factors, particularly medical terms and conditions and their effect on mortality assumptions and large case management. Strong knowledge of financial underwriting, individual and business.
Strong technical background in all facets of underwriting. Strong communication skills with field force & peers.
Understanding of use of expert system to underwrite applications. Requires full understanding of system administrative tables, personal computing functions such as operating in a Windows environment.
Common sense approach, through experience, of when to deviate between conservative and more aggressive approaches based on the merits of the case.
Overall insight into costs,, statistics, basic accounting, workflow, work analysis, and management development.
Realize and enthusiastically accept that the underwriting and marketing functions tie together. Clear understanding of the Underwriting Triangle for profit (satisfactory decisions to client, agent, and company).

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
