Summary:
Greets visitors to the Ocean Star Museum, facilitates entry ticket sales, assists customers with gift shop sales, and is a host/guide to visitors - explaining the basic building layout, and an introduction to the museum's mission, as well as assisting with any special needs or questions.
This position carries three primary
Responsibilities:
ticket sales and gift shop assistance, museum docent/greeter, and special tour guide.
JOB DUTIES:
Gift Shop Assistant/Ticket Sales:
Greet customers on entry through the museum gift shop.
Handle ticket sales to the museum, advising visitors on ticketing and visitor rules, parking etc.
and answer any questions they may have related to their visit, the Ocean Star, Galveston area attractions, restaurants and any current special events in the area.
Process all cash register operations, close out procedures, and prepare the daily deposits.
Ensure that cash drawer contains sufficient amounts to provide change, and that packaging supplies are kept above set minimum levels.
Work under the direction of the Retail and Operations Manager with regards to tracking of discounted inventory and all shop merchandise displays.
Assist with the receipt of new inventory and stacking shelves for display.
Monitor appearance of the gift shop such as ensure brochure racks are always filled and perform light housekeeping duties as needed to maintain a clean appearance of the Gift Shop.
Docent/Tour Guide:
Carry out opening and closing procedures for the museum facility, including doors, lights, audio/video components and breakers.
Operate the provided schedule of the film for visitors.
Provide comprehensive information about the Ocean Star and the Oilfield Industry, particularly where directly related to the current museum exhibits.
Training will be provided.
Routinely assist with prearranged guided group tours for youth, senior, and adult groups.
Flexible to scheduled or unscheduled groups and works closely with staff to assure a positive experience for visitors of all ages.
Monitor appearance of the museum by checking restrooms periodically for paper supplies and fill as needed, perform light housekeeping as needed to maintain daily appearance of the public spaces, replenish brochures, and inform relevant staff or management promptly of other visible site needs that may arise.
HOURS:
Part-time hourly, not eligible for benefits.
Staff are scheduled to work between the hours of 9:
30 AM to 5:
30 PM for up to eight hours per day, and the museum is open seven days per week, year-round except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
Longer hours may be available during peak tourist season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), during tours or special events, and as assigned.
PAY RATES:
$9.
00 hour (training rate); $11.
00/hour (regular rate); $13.
00/hour (interpretive guide).
There is a two-week probationary training period, at the end of which, staff must prove sufficient adequacy in all areas to continue employment.
Experience:
Six months experience with customer service and public speaking preferred, some knowledge of oil and gas industry a plus.
